If my phone has been disconnected, can I still call 9-1-1?

Yes. Even if your phone has been disconnected, you are still able to use 9-1-1. You need to make sure the call taker has your name, address, and all other pertinent information.

What can I do to make sure my cell phone doesn't accidentally call 9-1-1?

Most cell phones have the feature to lock the keypad. Locking the keypad will still allow you to receive calls, but it won't dial in to 9-1-1 accidentally, such as when a number gets pressed and held on the keypad.

What if I call 9-1-1 by mistake and hang up before the call is answered? Will it still ring through to the 9-1-1 Center?

Yes. These calls do normally ring into the Center. If you hang up, the call taker will ring the phone number back to verify whether or not there is an emergency.

If I call to report something such as a domestic and I am a third party caller, will those involved be able to find out who reported it?

Do I call 9-1-1 for all emergencies?

Yes. The 9-1-1 call takers will dispatch for EMS and fire calls. In the case of needing law enforcement, the call taker can transfer the caller to the appropriate agency, be it police, sheriff, or the state highway patrol.

Can Hearing-Impaired people call 911?

Yes! Just call 9-1-1 using your TDD (Telecommunications Device for the Deaf), and the calltaker will be able to communicate with you using software on their computer.

What exactly is the number for 911?

Sounds like a joke, but some people have been confused. Make sure you dial 9-1-1, not 9-11 (there is no 11 button on your phone, I hope).

Helpful Hints

Instruct your children, and their baby-sitter how to use 911 properly.

Make sure your house number is visible at night from the street and is clearly posted where your driveway joins the main road.

Make sure your address and phone number are posted by the family phone(s), so they can be read by anyone using the telephone in an emergency.
